Supporting an end to Homophobia
In recent years, the environment for gay and lesbian people has become less hostile than it once was. But there are still countless millions of people across the world whose lives are made truly miserable by having to hide their relationships. Many relationships end because of the pressure of secrecy.
Taking a Stand
Like other minority discrimination, homophobia is fed by ignorance; by the assumption that homosexuality is some deviant life-style choice of strange people on the edges of society.
Intollerence of homosexuality is promoted by condemnation from religious fundamentalists; and reinforced by unawareness and bigotry. It exists because the majority of society do not realise they have friends, neighbours, family and colleagues who are gay. It is self-perpetuating because gay people themselves conceal their sexuality and their relationships out of fear or embarassment or shame.
But every one of us can take a stand. Regardless of your own orientation, you can help to take away prejudice and fear of prejudice. You can let everyone know that you stand for freedom, and persuade your friends to do the same.
Wear a Rainbow
Wearing an "end homophobia" wristband is a strke against prejudice. It sends a message to society that intolerance is being replaced by acceptance, that bigotry itself is the mindset of an unacceptable minority. It sends a message to gay and lesbian people that they are welcomed in society and have nothing to fear. And it gives the opportunity for people who are interested to ask and learn more. Being counted will make the biggest difference of all.
"End Homophobia" Wristbands
From Summer 2006, Kyosei Systems has given away thousands of rainbow wristbands embossed with the words "End Homophobia" at Pride events in our operating countries of Britain, Japan and China. We've been giving them out because we passionately believe in telling the world that homosexuality is not wrong, it's not to be feared or hated, and that fighting human love is one of the cruelest persecutions humans can inflict on each other.
Help Make a Difference!
Individually our voices are so small. But together we can end homophobia for good. Please use the forums to make your voice heard, and together let's make homophobia a concept of the past.
Warm wishes to you all!
